Fast facts

  • The Ex-HMAS ADELAIDE was a long-range escort frigate. It was built in the USA and commissioned in 1980. It was decommissioned in 2008 after 28 years of service. 

  • Major roles included the Gulf War (1990/91), peacekeeping operations in East Timor (1999 & 2006) and deployed to the Arabian Gulf in 2001 and 2004.  The ship was also involved in the high profile search and rescue of solo yachtsmen Thierry Dubois and Tony Bullimore from the Southern Ocean in 1997.

  • The ship is 138.1 metres long, with a beam (width) of 14.3 metres and displacement of 4100 tonnes.

  • It is the first military dive site in NSW.

  • It will be one of six military dive sites around Australia (Ex-HMAS Brisbane Mooloolaba QLD, Ex HMAS Swan Dunsborough WA, Ex- HMAS Perth Albany WA, Ex-HMAS Hobart The Fleurieu Peninsula SA, Ex-HMAS Canberra Ocean Grove VIC)

  • It will be the closest to shore and major population centres.

  • It will be located approximately 1.8km off the coast at Terrigal in around 32m of water.
