Work on preparing the Ex-HMAS ADELAIDE is going well and is now 95% complete. A major environmental inspection of the ship took place last week with only minor issues identified. The final areas to be prepared are the Engine Room and Auxiliary Machine Room 3. Work on these areas is well underway and work to be completed in the coming weeks for the final inspection will consist primarily of general cleaning and securing of items that will remain in place during the scuttling. All is still on target to scuttle the ship on 27th March 2010 provided the weather is suitable. If this is the case the ship will be towed through Sydney Harbour in the week preceding the scuttling. The environmental assessment for the project has now been finalised and is available on the website.
Progress in the last month has been significant. DEWHA have now completed their second inspection with only minor work needed. Work and cleaning of Auxiliary Machinery Room 2 (AMR 2) is complete with work on AMR1 and AMR3 well underway. The project team are on target to complete all work.
The scuttling event has now been declared a state significant event and the Office of Protocols and Special Events is now working with the project team to ensure the scuttling is successful and spectacular.
Further information about the event will be available in the new year.
